Jennifer Fox, RD, LD Achieves Certified Diabetes Educator Status

SMYRNA, GA, (July 8, 2010) — The National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE) announced that Jennifer Fox, RD, LD, CDE, Emory-Adventist Hospital at Smyrna (EAH) Dietary Director achieved Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) status by successfully completing the Certification Examination for Diabetes Educators. Candidates must meet rigorous eligibility requirements to be able to take the Examination. Achieving certification status demonstrates to people with diabetes and employers that the health care professional possesses distinct and specialized knowledge, thereby promoting quality care for people with diabetes. Currently, there are over 16,600 diabetes educators who hold NCBDE certification.

Since joining EAH in 2005, Ms. Fox has been an integral part of the monthly diabetes education program offered at the hospital. “Growing up, I had a family member who was affected by diabetes, so for me, learning to teach others who have diabetes how they can control their blood sugars through diet and education was very important,” she says. In addition to the monthly Diabetes Education program, Ms. Fox is part of EAH’s new Hyperglycemia collaborative initiative which provides the safest care for hospital in-patients using evidence-based practice to make sure their blood sugars are maintained at less than 180 mg/dl in order to decrease their length of stay, improve wound healing and overall outcomes for the patients. For more information about the Diabetes Education program, visit the website at www.emoryadventist.org or call 770-319-2021.

NCBDE was established in 1986 to develop and administer a certification program for health care professionals who teach individuals with diabetes how to manage their disease. Through the development, maintenance, and protection of the certification process and the CDE credential, NCBDE recognizes and advances the specialty practice of diabetes education. NCBDE supports the concept of voluntary, periodic certification for all diabetes educators who meet credential and experience eligibility requirements. For more information, visit the website at www.ncbde.org or call the national office at 847-228-9795.
