Emory-Adventist Hospital at Smyrna Achieves High Marks in Implementation of Computerized Provider Order Entry
Hospital Passes Leapfrog Evaluation Tool with Highest Rating Possible

(Smyrna, GA, January 26, 2011)—Last year Emory-Adventist Hospital at Smyrna launched its computerized provider order entry system, or CPOE, an electronic prescribing system for all inpatients. CPOE is designed to reduce medical errors and speed up patient care. Now, Emory-Adventist Hospital has achieved the highest rating obtainable for the Leapfrog CPOE Evaluation Tool, the industry standard CPOE assessment tool.

CPOE systems are electronic prescribing systems that intercept errors when they most commonly occur – at the time medications are ordered. With CPOE, physicians enter orders into a computer rather than on paper. Orders are integrated with patient information, including laboratory and prescription data. The order is then automatically checked for potential errors or problems. Specific benefits of CPOE include:
• Prompts that warn against the possibility of drug interaction, allergy or overdose
• Accurate, current information that helps physicians keep up with new drugs as they are introduced into the market
• Drug-specific information that eliminates confusion among drug names that sound alike

Leapfrog’s CPOE Evaluation Tool was developed by First Consulting Group and the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, and provides hospitals with an assessment of the adequacy of their CPOE system alerts for common, serious prescribing errors. The tool requires hospitals to download a series of simulated patients and medication orders, and to input those patient/medication combinations into the hospital’s CPOE system. Hospitals submit a report on the alerts received at point of order-entry. The reported alerts are compared against the expected alerts identified by a national research and development panel. A hospital’s rating on the tool is the percentage of correct alerts they received in the specific categories.

“The fact that Emory-Adventist Hospital received the overall rating of ‘fully implemented’ for medication checking, the highest rating obtainable, shows the commitment of our doctors and clinicians to patient safety and superior care,” said Dennis Kiley, CEO, Emory-Adventist Hospital at Smyrna.
