Uterine Fibroid Embolization

What are fibroids?

Fibroids are benign (non-cancerous tumors of the uterus, composed of smooth muscle found normally in the uterus.  They are called myomas or leiomyomas.  Click here for more details concerning the symptoms and treatment of uterine fibroids.

Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)

UFE is a non-surgical alternative to hysterectomy or other surgical alternatives in the treatment of uterine fibroids.  UFE is performed at Emory-Adventist Hospital at Smyrna under the direction of John C. Lipman, MD, FSIR.

Dr. Lipman is a pioneer in the development of uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) and is an active participant in clinical research trials that have helped demonstrate the safety and efficacy of UFE as a treatment for uterine fibroids. He has the largest UFE experience in the Southeast and one of the largest worldwide experiences, having performed over 2,000 UFE procedures. He was the Principal Investigator for one of the 23 core sites for the UFE National Fibroid Registry which enrolled over 3,000 women with symptomatic fibroids. This study is sponsored by the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Research & Education Foundation and the Society of Interventional Radiology, in cooperation with the Duke Clinical Research Institute, and is the largest collection of data on any fibroid treatment (including hysterectomy or myomectomy).

Dr. Lipman earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine. He completed an Internship in Internal Medicine which was followed by Radiology Residency training at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He then completed a Fellowship in Vascular & Interventional Radiology at Yale New-Haven Hospital, Yale University School of Medicine. He was awarded Fellowship in the Society of Interventional Radiology (only 5% of Interventional Radiologists worldwide receive such recognition.)

Dr. Lipman is board certified in Radiology and Vascular & Interventional Radiology by the American Board of Radiology. He is the author of numerous published articles and has lectured physicians at Stanford, Harvard, and Vanderbilt Medical Centers to name a few. He also lectures to community groups and is available upon request for lectures, health fairs, and wellness seminars. He has appeared live on CNN with Wolf Blitzer, and has been interviewed for USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, CNBC, The Health Network, and WebMD.

His practice, Atlanta Interventional Institute, is located at 3903 South Cobb Drive, Suite 230, Smyrna, GA (on the campus of Emory-Adventist Hospital.
